Brave New World: The New Tax Landscape

We are holding two free seminars at The Platinum Suite, Sheffield United Football Club, Bramall Lane, Sheffield on Tuesday 13 May 2008 and at The Keepmoat Stadium, Stadium Way, Doncaster on Tuesday 20 May 2008. Free parking is available at both venues.

Alistair Darling has fundamentally changed large parts of the tax system within a year of taking office, but it is not clear whether he or the government fully understand the consequences for business of what he has done. These seminars will unravel and explain the tax planning opportunities. The seminars will be presented by Peter Kennan, Tax Partner and Brian Gooch and Stephen Charles, Senior Tax Managers. They will cover:

Appointment of Tax Manager

Hawsons, the leading independent Chartered Accountants in South Yorkshire, have appointed Nicola Keene as a Tax Manager in the Personal Tax Department of their Sheffield Office. Nicola is a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and has worked at Hawsons for nearly three years.

In his last Budget speech, Gordon Brown announced certain changes to capital allowances for plant and machinery and to Industrial Buildings Allowances and Agricultural Buildings Allowances.

Last month we reported that the taxpayers had won in the infamous Arctic Systems case. As you will no doubt remember HMRC were trying to assess Mrs Jones’ dividends on her husband. Following the decision the government announced its intention to legislate to prevent what they refer to as ‘non-commercial arrangements’ to divert income. They have also issued guidance to taxpayers who were in a similar position to Mr and Mrs Jones on the completion of their tax returns. Legal services market: reform or die?

The legal services market, currently worth an estimated £20 billion a year, is clearly valuable and is growing yearly, however the total number of lawyers is actually increasing at a faster rate. During the past 20 years, the number of practising solicitors in England and Wales has more than doubled and we are now beginning to see the problems of over-supply. The consequence for many legal firms is that competition drives down fees and profits are squeezed as the cost base remains high.
