Charity Tax group launch a national survey on charity VAT relief

The Charity Tax Group are launching a national survey on charity VAT relief. The group say the research will gather information on the amount of VAT relief claimed by UK charities, which they say will put them in a more robust position to defend the tax reliefs that are currently in place.

This survey is going to provide data comparing the VAT system and the contribution charities are able to make and reclaim compared to other sectors. Currently there are no statistics or figures that state the amount of VAT relief that charities are able to claim. Furthermore, there is no research that analyses the effects of changes to the VAT system and reliefs and how this might apply to charities.

The Charity Tax Group believe that this research will put them in a stronger position to defend what charities value about the VAT system and therefore will help them to and advise the government where positive changes can be made. But as no data is currently available to validate their argument, conducting their own research is the only avenue available.

A statement from The Charity Tax Group said: “We must put ourselves in the position of being able to defend what we value about the VAT system and persuade government to consider changes where the system can be improved.”

“The only effective way to do this is to have the statistical data to demonstrate the impact on a charity’s ability to perform its mission in the first instance and then the broader contribution made towards the socio-economic wellbeing of the country, including the creation of employment and taxes paid to the Treasury.”
