September car sale figures extends industry gloom

The optimism that there would be a huge growth in UK car sales in September have been halted, as more concerns are being spread about the industries financial health. The industry had been hoping for double-digit growth from last September, but sales only rose by 1.3% from last year’s figures.

Car sales have fallen by 2.5% in the first nine months of this year to 1.86million (statistics by the Motor Manufacturers and Traders).

Sales decreased in September 2018 by 20% because of the introduction of new emission rules which limited the availability of some vehicles. Therefore, this was the reason why the industry was expecting a double digit rise in sales. Chief executive of the Motor Manufacturers and Traders Mike Hawes welcomed any increase from last year but was hoping for a much larger increase.

Mr Hawes said: “Consumer confidence is being undermined by political and economic uncertainty. We need to restore stability to the market which means avoiding a no-deal Brexit and, moreover, agreeing a future relationship with the EU that avoids tariffs and barriers that could increase prices and reduce buyer choice.”
